He's been brainwashed. Young people are the most susceptible to the brainwashing of religion.
Then as they approach adulthood Cognitive Bias kicks in and almost nothing will change their belief as they rationalize in every way they can how their belief is true no matter what anybody says, just like you're doing right now as you read these words.
Pretty sad really, and I doubt he even had a choice.
