Let's make a change...(expand more info)

There are growing concerns on the topic of Genetically Modified Foods and their UNLABELLED prescense at the grocery store. This is most likely in relation to the spread of information on the subject. The most common modified foods are derived from plants: soybean, corn, canola, and cotton seed oil.

Unlike Japan, who has banned Genetically Modified Food, or the UK and about 20 other countries who REQUIRE Genetically Modified Foods to be labelled, the shelves of our Canadian Grocery stores are being populated by foods that have been subjected to genetic engineering.

We did have a bill, http://www2.parl.gc.ca/HousePublications/Publication.aspx?DocId=3314855&&..., but it was voted down; possibly due to under-education of our Members of Parliament and ignorance of the public - MYSELF INCLUDED - that the bill was being presented and the implications at hand.


I'm not a scientist, but maybe the first Canadian Genetisis I can think of, who is Internationally recognized, has something to say on the subject...

Member for Brandon - Souris

Genetically Modified Foods and the biotechnology involved are a concern to me. I do not feel that the outcome for the vote on Bill C-517, an Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (mandatory labelling for genetically modified foods), represented the voices of Canadians.

Notable members of the Canadian Scientific community, such as David Suzuki, have spoken on the subject of Genetically Engineer Organisms, labelling the genetic engineering of food as an irreversable experiment that has the potential to impact both future generations and the ecosystem.

More than 20 other countries have demanded this for foods they import - where products exported from Canada are labelled but not the ones sold to Canadians. Should we not be as informed as the people we sell our goods to?

As I am not alone in this concern, this will be an election issue at the next opportunity. For the future of both our families, Mr Tweed, if you have not yet done so - please take the time to educate yourself on this matter and make an informed decision based on the concerns of your voters.

GMOs disgust me. The whole idea is a perversion of nature. Science is viewed as great but the disasters created by science in pursuit of knowledge are too great to ignore.
