Dick is a real DICK !! The Coriolis effect is not a myth !!! Is a fact !!!! I mean, this idiot obviously didn't go to school in the U.S.A. . Then again, I would not doubt if he did provided that I run into so many morons like Dick - acting like a dick !!
Neither I am ameridan nor I have any reason to believe only americans fall for that tourist trap.
Pus, I sincerely doubt any native that makes a living with these kind of displays, went to highschool in their native countries, and I doubt they think much about it
@rogerpenna I've seen it in Ecuador as well. ALL the tourists fall for it. They're like "ooooh, how interesting!" While the natives must be thinking, "these Americans are idiots."
hi there. I live in southern Brazil, latitude 30 South, and water turns in different directions depending of the sink or toilet I use in my house. This myth is just stupid and it pisses me off the quantity of people (specially people from the northern hemisphere) who believe the coriolis effect can act in such small scale systems.
worse of all is an Ugandan tourist trap, where the guy moves a few meters from S to N over the equator, and shows water turning in a different direction. Lame.
I'm afraid what you are seeing are other dynamical influences. The Coriolis Effect does not accelerate water enough to produce the observed rotation. Look at it from a conservation of angular momentum standpoint knowing that f=2*omega*sin(phi) with phi being your lat. Quantitive analysis will show contracting a 1.5 ft ring to 1 in only produces about 1 revolution every 4.5 minutes!

@kubush Ameridan was just a typo. The D is right over the C in QWERTY keyboards.

@rogerpenna ameridan? I would say mostly Americans but that's my opinion. The people doing the displays know that it's a con.

Amazing science guys!
You had the technical details exact.
I was impressed when you made sure to 'stir' the water in the hand basin just before extracting the plug.
LAME.
