With a chance to close out the series without the pressure of home ice, Edmonton once again took a 2-0 lead against a hesitant Flyers club on a disputed goal by Kevin Lowe and a stuffer by checking winger Kevin McClelland. The Oilers took control of the game in all aspects, outshooting Philly 15--5 in the opening 20 minutes.

Showing no signs of life, the Flyers' fate looked all but sealed until Lindsay Carson managed to thread a puck through Grant Fuhr's pads a little more than seven minutes into the second period. Instead of the Flyers gaining momentum from the goal. The Oilers poured the pressure on, and carried play into the third period. However, Anderson's careless high-sticking penalty with eight minutes left in regulation led to Propp's electric game-tying goal, snapping a shot high into the left corner of the net. Only seconds later, little-used Flyer defenceman J. J. Daigneault became an unlikely hero as he stepped up to a dying puck inside the Oilers blue line, and cranked it just inside the right post to give the Flyers a 3--2 advantage. The only real threat to that lead came with 10 seconds left, when Mark Messier picked off Hextall's attempted clear, broke in, and took one shot into Hextall's pads and a second over the top of the net. Mark Howe knocked down a last-ditch Oiler effort at the buzzer, and the Finals headed to a seventh game for the first time since 1971.

One sports writer called it "The greatest comeback from the dead I have ever witnessed". Given what was riding on this game and how the Flyers once again found a way to bounce back. This will always be remembered as one of the greatest games in Flyers' History.

Please be sure to watch the rest of 1987 Finals highlight videos I have posted of you have not already . Please vote and comment on them all. It is my hope that one day this series will be released on DVD in its entirety. Maybe your comments and votes will help.

  • For the record, there is STILL no way that the Edmonton Oilers were somehow a better team without Paul Coffey then with. It is an idiotic thing to suggest. You do NOT get addition from subtraction! ; )

  • Turn the Soviet Red Army marching music off and you'd have a good video.

  • @Halgrim First of all, it is not "Soviet Red Army Music". It is called "They're Here" from the Incredible Hulk Soundtrack. Second, assuming your computer comes with a volume control, if you do not like it turn it down or better yet, don't watch. Third, and maybe most importantly, whenever you make a video even half as good without or without the music then maybe you can criticize.

  • I agree that '87 was the best regular season they ever had, but I still think that the '88 team was the best overall team I have ever seen. And it was the best I think I have ever seen Gretzky play outside of international competition (especially Canada Cup '87)

  • @StalkerJamforx Well, you are entitled to think that but EVERY statistical piece of evidence says otherwise. Even their 88 playoff stats.

Gretzky? He is an individual and that is a different story. But even there, in 86-87 he played in 79 Games & had 62G, 121A for 183pts for a+70. In 87-88 he only played 64 games for 40G, 109A, 149pts for a +39. His PPG was basically identical. Yes he had a much better playoff run PERSONALLY in 88 but remember, he played in 15 less games getting there.

  • @StalkerJamforx Sorry for the multiple messages but I can't help myself. Everything says you are wrong but you don't seem to see it. Consider this, when comparing the playoff years in '87 they scored a total of 87 goals (3 more games played), in 88 they scored almost the same at 84. Now we agree Gretzky had a better playoff run PERSONALLY in 88. In 87 he only had 5 goals. in 88 more than double at 12. What does that tell you? Gretzky was better in 88 than in 87 but the TEAM was worse.

  • Best finals ever. The Flyers could have actually beaten the Oilers, but they couldn't possibly beat the Oilers AND the cheating referees. I don't think there's any question that the NHL has the worst officiating in pro sports and that they do cheat certain teams, the Flyers unquestionably being at the very top of that list because of the Broad St. Bullies etc.

  • Yes MR. Hart the 87 series was indeed glorious!

  • the night the spectrum truly shook...

  • Unbelievable perfomance by Hextall.

  • @Halgrim wtf? the music is the best part. makes me want to fight a canadian

  • Gene(Hart) in 2011 this still gives true sports / hockey fans chills............in all honesty, this was as good as it gets. I was 7 years old and remember my father and our neighbor going INSANE when JJ secord that goal. This series was truly a classic, and while the Flyers lost, Philly was behind their boys!
