http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/dog-tricks.html Before you start your dog trick training sessions it is important to "charge the clicker". When charging the clicker you are building a positive association in your dog's mind between the clicker and the tasty treats.

  • hi there, thanks for th videos. Im looking at getting an english cocker puppy soon and these areall great tips. Do you use the clicker all their life? Or is is only for as long as it takes them to learn the tricks/commands? cheers, Lyndsey

  • Hi there Lyndsey - yes you only need to use the clicker when you are teaching/shaping new behaviors. Once the behavior is solid, you then begin to fade the clicker and the treats.

    Good luck with your Cocker.

  • Hi,

Can you recommend a healthy food to use as the treat in the clicker training method? I see you give examples in the video but I'm just not quite able to make them out.

    Thanks.

  • Hi There,

The treats in the video are cheese and also dried liver.

The most important consideration is how much motivation the treat provides to your dog - in other words, how much they like it. My Shih Tzu loves small pieces of cheese.

I've seen some dogs who love little pieces of carrot and other vegetables - but I'd say this is rare. More common treats are pieces of hotdog, kong training treats and various forms of dried liver.

    Good luck with your dog.

  • is this nessecery before every training session with the clicker?

  • Hi Nick

    Good question.

Once the clicker is charged you do not have to "re-charge" it each training session. Your dog will remember what it represents every time. Dogs love the sound of the clicker and hang out to hear it's sweet sound (which means a tasty treat will be coming their way).

  • my shih tzu has the tendency to bite the treat out of my fingers with out wating for me to give it to her how do u stop that?

  • hi! great training videos! =) how old was Macy when she did those tricks? I have a 4month old shih tzu and i wanna know if now's a good time to start training him. Also, what if there's no available clicker? What can you suggest for replacement? Thanks alot! =)

  • SUPER HELPFUL VIDEO!!! I've been watching dozens of dog training videos for months, by very talented dog trainers, and this is the only single one that mentioned you may need to have several sessions simply CHARGING the clicker... Wow. And i was getting really, really discouraged with trying to train dogs at all.

  • hey when should i start training my shih tzu he is two months old

  • Charging the clicker is simply associating the clicker with something your dog is familiar with and likes.... Treats!!

  • I doubt it was chocolate, also my dog accidentally got into a whole jar of fudge one night and ate every single lick of it. He did not even have a sick stomach the next day.
