True, but this particular work was composed around 1860, full quarter of a century before Liszt's death. So it is hardly a late work, though it is indeed prophetic in its use of the whole-tone scale.

i like very much this piece, but i find the reading against the music. I don t like how Wolf Kahler reads... there is no mystery and no music in his voice.

His works near the end of his life tend to be on the "different" side. Some of them even have foreshadowing of impressionism.
