I was surprised to learn that Larry Alcala is not a national artist. Even as a kid I knew his work was brilliant, how much more today? I wonder if the person that decides who becomes a national artist really knows what he or she is doing?

There's a selection committee composed of National Artists and others of high standing in the arts community, who go by specific guidelines set down by the NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts). Larry Alcala and Francisco V. Coching have been considered, and have yet to be titled. CJC got in because the Philippine President has the legal prerogative to add names. The fact that she added CJC over Alcala and Coching is telling of her regard for the arts in this country.
