  • OMG, I hear Vickers in your voice so much. Well done. Your understanding of this role is so obvious, and not overdone as so many others try and do. It's a mad scene, not an angry one. 10 thumbs up!!

  • I think we SOON will see Shem in this part on stage, don't you? (maybe even on film. This is the ideal opera to make a film out of!) (it takes place in many different surroundings. And with a lot of people involved.)

  • If you read the bio on this tenor, he was extensively coached personally by Jon Vickers in preparation for this role. That might explain the similarities in approach to this scene. Apparently, he is a close personal friend of the Vickers family. I believe one of Vickers's sons was his best man at his wedding. I personally don't see this as an "imitation" of Vickers - more a concurrence of concepts.

  • There is a reason that this performance reminds you of Vickers--it is a very close imitation of the famous video from here on YouTube. Watch this and then watch the Vickers: all of the musical timing, colors, etc. are direct imitations of that video. It is very nice singing, but I'll bet this man, who, from his introduction of the piece, seems to be an intelligent person, could try a bit more to interpret this piece as he sees fit, instead of imitating someone else.

  • @ellandelachapelle I agree. I wish the Atlanta Opera would do it. It's weird cause people complain about "Modern Opera", in fact when they did Albert Herring about 15 years ago, supposly people ran out of the theater in disgust,(they've never did a Britten Opera since) but when the did Glass' Ahkenatan last year it was sold out.

  • Shem-

You have the voice for this role, no doubt. Although Pears was Britten's choice, I believe that Vickers was the greatest. I can only offer one word of advice- the accompaniment is subordinated to the madness of your singing. There was a couple of times that you moved on beat with the pianist. It was punctuation, I get it, but, Grimes does not hear the music (at least I wouldn't think) Your voice is extraordinary and I hope that we hear more from you in the future!

  • An orchestra? This piece requires only an off-stage tuba, a male choir and a female choir (also both off-stage).

  • it would have sound better with an orchestra, but this concert was planned so & it is perfectly o.k.

  • powerful

    authentic

    beautiful

    talent abounds!

  • Yes isn't it great? I often say that I think any YOUNG person (who is into rock, hiphop and so on) would love this opera! It's not OPERA, it's about LIFE!(if you see what I mean.)(SO pointless staging a lot of operas that have no MEANING for people!) If you want to see another mad scene, please watch the S:t Basil scene from Boris Godunov with the phantastic Russian tenor Ivan Kozlowski! (one of my favourite clips on YouTube.)
