@kbrake36 Those trails in fact are not made by Sherman's troops. They were made by the power company to access right of way to the powerlines.
The actual crossing was in two places. Both several hundred yards downstream of this location. The bridge that was to accomodate the crossing, was scuttled before Sherman's arrival. You can still find the abutements. His troops built a floating bridge just upstream from there, and another group flanked Columbia toward Winnsboro.
Why aren't you looking at Shermans encampment a few hundred yards down river? Hundreds of GREAT Civil War relics are found there annually.
The river depth since the civil war is the same here. The damming of the river has not reduced the flow, since the Saluda still feeds the lake at the same rate as it flowed prior to the dam, and TWO major rivers converge here. Ships were never used here. Flat barges were used to transport goods. The canal was built for the barges to avoid the rocky river.
My aunt and uncle live on Suluda River Road in a development called "The Lakes". in its surfside beach. Is that any where near where you are? Anywho... Nice finds!! Good video!
