  • I know in the 60's while Rotorys were being designed, the single rotor designs were highly susceptible to 'chatter marks' that lined the inside of the rotor housing, most likely from the apex seals, after long stress tests.

Is this model prone to similar behaviour?

  • @hellman100 as far as i know these engines were the first which tride to fix that problem even tho they say mazda was. ive been toald they were really good engines, they only were made for short time because they company did not want them used by the israil millitary, they used them for 6 man troop transports, water pumps and lathes, fuel transfer pumps

  • @aza2speed

I had read the Mazda biography on their website, and I remember specifically that they said they were working on the single rotor design and never got it work, switching to 2+ Rotors. It may be that other people seem to claim they solved them but it sounded like they never built(at least not extensively) single rotor engines....

Had they made single engine Rotarys ever?

  • @hellman100 i believe no, there is a company in theUSA making 13b and single rotor motors for bikes based on the 13b they are very good motors and not a bad price. there is also gokart makers in austrailia who make a 400cc motor. because the 40 year patent is over for mazda there is a lot of people starting to make there own single rotor motors now

  • single rotor?

  • @rollaturbo yea it single rotor 440cc

  • @aza2speed Is it just the patent?

Companies have made Rotary engines before Mazda, and still make them.

I wonder if the gas crisis has brought attention back to the Rotary engine as the 'saviour'?

Kind of silly, seeing as how it's always had worse gas mileage as a commuter car, and yet on the racetrack it seems to be MUCH more efficient than gas cylinder engines.

I love the rotary, but until some serious development is done, it will stay suited to the racetracks from which it was banned.

  • ???
