The first ever race in 1987 had a one way bridge on the circuit. I remember the FIA official refusing a permit and everyone had to take out local club licenses to run. They tore em up at the end of the day. Robbie Francevic won in his Volvo but as there was no proper race scoring we (TVNZ) made it up. John Morton and Frank Synter actually won as they were a lap ahead of Francevic but it made good telly..

Group A,the best racing ever ,before things turned gay with all the safety and only two makes of cars.

aaah no safety here...just like the black speedway tracks here in NZ...no fence...no roll cage...nothing in the way of safety

Group A racing was the best, there was real variety in the racing. Overtaking was a regular occurance, not a rarity as it is now. The cars were production based so the 'average' guy on the street could identify with them. We need to return to the simplicity of those days.

You wouldnt be allowed to do this today! Look at the lack of protection for the crowds! And the lack of fire suits for Marshalls, not to mention the HUGE lack of fencing along the peir! This was the day!, but its just amazing to see footage of it! We were all SO relaxed back then with everything! Just AMAZING!!! Thanks for posting, give us more!
