See how to easily set your Windows 7 computer's DNS address to Google's DNS server for better security and improve performance by going into your Networks adapter or router's properties and changing the DNS address to Google DNS which is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 .

In Windows 7 you can very easily change your DNS settings by typing "Network and Sharing in the start menu's text box and click on the change adapter seting link in the left sidebar.

You right click on your network adapter and pick properties.

Look for TCP/IPV4 on the list and pick properties.

Select "Use the following DNS server addresses"

Type 8.8.8.8 in the first box and 8.8.4.4 in the second box and click ok.

If you want to change your router's DNS, so all PCs on your home network use 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Open up your web browser like Internet Explorer and type in your routers website address which looks like 192.168.1.1 for Trendnet routers.

Find your DNS settings it is usually found on the WAN or Internet section of your Router.

Type in 8.8.8.8 in the first box and 8.8.4.4 in the second box, and click ok.

  • Why my change adapter settings was blank? They say No connections are available so I click on Troubleshoot. Problems found is The Atheros AR9002WB-1NG Wireless Network Adapter adapter is experiencing driver- or hardware-related problem Detected. And another one that say is The Atheros AR8152/8158 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20) adapter is experiencing driver- or hardware-related problem Detected. PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE.

  • @PandaLazyBoy If your motherboard has onboard networking, you may need to disable the onboard nerworking port in the BIOS or motherboard. You can try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver which came with your Wireless card, or download the latest version from the company's website.

  • does this work with windows xp

  • @assassino1002 You can change the DNS settings in Windows Xp, but it is slightly different the way you look for the DNS network adapter. Try searching YouTube on "how to change network adapter card DNS settings in Windows XP" video.

  • Does one need to change the DNS server IP addresses in both the router and the adapter settings or is it better to change it in just one place or the other? And if so which?

    Thanks, Randy

  • @Wacher141 For a laptop, tablet, or mobile computer, it is best to use the adapter setings since you can use Google DNS on another network, but if your desktop computer is connected to your router, you can use your router DNS serings which is using Google DNS. Changing your routers DNS address to Google DNS can be useful if your ISP's DNS is unreliable, and you have visitors which would be using your network to go online. I just use Google DNS on both my router and adapter setings.
