@e69alpha Honestly, I don't even think he really cared anymore- Many, many years had passed...more than anyone could ever lived. He outlived his wife, who he attempted to desperatelly save her, in which HE DID I believe, but not himself, thus becoming more machine than a man... and in the end, when a cure IS found but the effects temporarily, who would want to go threw and live like that again? and in the end many years later, though a different man behind the mask, one person who cared: Batman

The saddest part to me is that he really wasn't a villain and it didn't have to end this way. He was always pitted with an unfortunate event and who knows maybe someone could have saved him
