PR Campaigns by Stu Sjouwerman

PR and marketing are the life blood of any company. You have to have great PR and you have to have great marketing. If you dont, then you might as well pack up and go home. This is the time to market share; this is the time to do more marketing and more PR than before, which is what we are doing by the way. So, this is the way to survive, promote more, not less.

Is presenting your company in a way that you cannot do with advertising. PR positions your company in the customers mind, as Oh, those are the guys who blah. You know they think in little categories, you know the first three. The best example is Avis and Hertz. You know we are only number 2, so we have to work harder. Oh yeah, I guess I will take those guys because they work harder. So, that is what PR does. You dont do that with advertising and that is why PR is so important. Well, we started some (inaudible) downtown Clearwater. We got about 180 staff now and what we wanted is for our staff members to have a fun downtown where they can do things; where they go to a restaurant or a bar or events, whatever, and so for me it was interesting to help revitalize downtown Clearwater. That is how I became a board member of the Clearwater Downtown Partnership and thats how Ive been well working for how long? Maybe three years now with Karla Jo [Helms] and she has done all the PR for the Clearwater Downtown Partnership, CDP in short, which of course has been quite excellent. She has been able to get the CDP on the map. Without KJ here the CDP would be nowhere.

The first real event we did was last year, Miracle in Cleveland, with the snow slides and we just got 2500 people out in the street, and the next event we got 3000, and that is truly the power of PR. We got in the paper; we got on the radio; people sent email to their friends, to their friends, to their friends. You know it went viral and PR does that, and of course, that works for both commercial, but also for non-profits.
