  • @cf1934 Thats exactly right. It was told in Steve Haskins book about Dr. Fager. Arcaro said Secretariat was the fastest horse he ever seen and rated him the best he ever seen. That speaks volume considering all the great horses he rode and seen since Phar Lap.Cy was a great horse but never had the performances that left old time experts gasping like Secretariat did. If a horse is faster than the other he ususally wins everytime unless he is not sound and fit. Times tell ya how fast a horse is.

  • Eddie Arcaro was the best jockey I ever saw, and I've seen a lot of them, from John Longden to Garrett Gomez. They didn't call Eddie "The Master" for nothing. He won 17 Triple Crown races and more Horse of the Year horses than any rider in history.

  • @TheTypicalGirl In public he would say Citation. He didn't want to make his friend Jimmy Jones, trainer of Citation, mad

  • In a article Posted Nov. 15, 1997 by Bill Christine staff writer for the Los Angeles Times titled:

'The Master Is Dead At 81'

In an interview last year, Arcaro said Citation and Kelso were the best horses he ever rode. But he rated Secretariat, who ran long after Arcaro had retired, as the best he'd ever seen.

  • when the horse broke the million dollar point..they dont tell who was riding the horse..the jockey was steve brooks..

  • Having been around the major tracks for several decades, I can attest to what I know is the truth: Arcaro always believed that Citation was the best 3-year-old he ever rode (before Cy got hurt)...at times, Arcaro did state that Kelso was the "best horse he ever rode" and that Ben Jones' handling of Whirlaway (a real rogue early in his career) was the greatest training feat he ever saw.

  • Lots of jocks do that,Shoemaker did it also. It is probably just human nature. In the end it doesn't matter because they were all great, otherwise no mention would be made at all.

  • I was always a bit confused about who Arcaro thought his best horse ever was. I've heard him say Citation and Kelso at varying times.
