Ryōan-ji (Temple of the Peaceful Dragon), is a Buddhist Zen Temple located in Kyoto Japan that is best known as the location of the famous Karesansui (dry landscape or rock garden), believed to have been built in the late 1400s.
The garden has fifteen moss-covered boulders surrounded by raked grave to simulate a lakel. The boulders are located such that, when looking at the garden from any position, only fourteen of the boulder scan be seen at one time. It is said that only through attaining enlightenment would one be able to view the fifteenth boulder.
