They are both different interpretations. John Owen-Jones and Colm Wilkinson happen to be my two favourite Valjeans, but I'll always prefer Colm. Not only does he bring so much emotion into every note he sings, but he also has incredible placement. He can sing utterly powerfully whilst holding his vibrato - something I've noticed many singers can't do brilliantly.

JOJ has much more power. While Colm is the original Valjean and will always be the best in many people's hearts, he gives Valjean a vulnerable presence. Valjean should be a very powerful and strong man, and that's what Owen-Jones gives him. I say John wins the battle.

I've seen the 10th anniversary, and for me Colm will always be the ultimate Valjean. I'm not denieing that JOJ sings well, very well - but Colm is the better Valjean in my opinion. As has already been said: JOJ plays an excellent Valjean, but Colm IS Valjean when he is on stage. There's no contest in THAT sense in my opinion. They're both great and awesome singers, but my Valjean is Colm Wilkinson.

After a couple years of commenting on this I now think that they both are amazing! But Colm IS Valjean while JOJ was playing Valjean. They both are soo amazing, JOJ does have some of the best vocals of any male singer too I agree! :)

I wish you would have used a video of JOJ from a live show, but either way JOJ sings this better. Colm's vibrato makes every note sound very sharp. It's harsh to listen to. He has great emotion and acts the role almost perfectly, but his voice is not pleasant in my opinion.

I'm not denying that Colm was the original, thus I'll always like him - but I saw John Owen Jones in Edinburgh during the 25th Anniversary, and he was phenomenal. So, I'm saying JOJ.

colm was the ORIGINAL JVJ, he was JVJ at the 10th anniversary, and he made a star appearance at the 25th anniversary, it is his song it always has been and always will be.

Chalk and cheese it's easy to hold as many of your notes in a concert rather than in a performance
COLM WILKINSON always sang it with charisma and so much fusioned in the role ,J.O.J sang it as a complex performence , very less commited ,and almost without emothional depth from Jean Valjeans , just a smoother voice .
this song is meant to be COLM`s , AN UNION OF A LIFE TIME !
