The sound is a combination of Joe Meek and Phil Spector's production sound. Since they're british, the sound is more Joe Meek style with the heavy echo. The harmonies and some of the sound is Phil Spector like. It's also similar to a lot of the other girl groups for the early 60's and the Philadelphia sound of the 60's.

These three will always be the real Pipettes...god I miss 'em.

They were formed (manufactured) as an 'experimental' style pop-group by a musician called Monster Bobby, in an attempt to emulate Phil Spector's girl groups of the 60s. As such, the reason they're still The Pipettes is because the girls were 'recruited' - though they all write the material.
This doesn't make them any less awesome.

Why? Really, why would they replace 2/3 of the group and still call them The Pippetts?
I just found out about them today and I'm pretty confused... maybe there's something I don't understand.
