If you are a an American Civil War history buff and have never had a chance to visit Vicksburg, Mississippi, here is a first view of the old courthouse. This courthouse was a landmark for Union forces when Gen. Ulysses S. Grant tried repeatedly to conquer Confederate held Vicksburg. First, the U.S. Navy flotilla successfully steamed past Vicksburg enduring heavy cannon bombardment as they raced downstream on the Mississippi River. The courthouse built on a high bluff stood defiantly like a fortress daring the Union forces to bypass Vicksburg. Secondly, during the Union seige of Vicksburg the courthouse could be seen in the distance and the clock bell in the coupola striking the hour stood as a monument of Confederate defiance. View video No.2 for continuing the history of Vicksburg during the Civil War.
