How many people have seen the movie Mamma Mia and been struck by the beautiful scenery, the clear blue seas, and friendly locals.
I wonder if you have been tempted to book a holiday in Greece this year?

Before you do, you should know there is also a very ugly side to Greece which is widespread all over the islands and the mainland.

At the end of every tourist season, around early November it is the start of the poisoning season and most tourists are unaware of this when they visit in the Summer.

From November until April, poison bait is laid for the cats and dogs and they suffer the most awful and agonising death. It is quite common for owned pet cats and dogs to fall victim as they cannot distinguish what is poison for strays. Most dog owners carry a syringe of antidote in their bags when walking the dogs as a precaution but when the bait contains crushed glass hidden in meat or fish then they have no chance of revival. Cats usually just disappear and die anyway and are not found in time. I have a friend living in Lesbos who says it is a nightmare and in her experience the poisoning can occur during the tourist season as well.

@McTavish1959 This sadly has been going on for decades and not likely to cease, in fact, each day it gets worse ie. hanging, shooting and abusing strays,  dumping newborn puppies and kittens in rubbish bins and now abandoning the pedigree animals as well because of the economy in Greece

@xtappas This is about animal cruelty and not racism. Every day we are trying to raise money which is sent to re-home, neuter and support the animal shelters run by ex pats and subsidised by u.k., mainly but also dutch, german, danish charities.

ANYONE CAUGHT POISONING AN ANIMAL RECIEVES JAIL SENTENCE AND THERE ARE REWARDS TO THOSE WHO PROVE TO THE COURT WHO HAS DONE THIS. @TheELADITSA Sadly prosecution or punishment hardly ever happens and nobody is prepared to act as witness, an example of this is the kardamena dog hanger who is known by everyone but they are too scared to speak out even though a large reward was offered by Greek Animal Rescue. Recently the chief of police sent out a directive regarding animal abuse, people are still ignoring this and in fact some police stations are not even aware of it or Law 3170/2003

I wish there was something more I could do for these animals. This abuse & neglect of all animals is sickening & overwhelming. My dogs & cats have always been a member of my family. I have cried after seeing what we humans can be accountable for. Our children are the next to be abused, then the elderly, when will it end? Animals have always been useful to man, and unconditionally loyal.

@TheELADITSA Always the FOREIGNERS, my little friend Eladitsa...Surely they are the cause for Greece's bancrupcy, no doubt they are the culprits for the corrupt political system (hundreds of thousands of flag waving sheep in the election campaigns are just patriots or what...), or the banana-republic judiciary....yes, its the foreigners!
