Media Extensions Sound Installation 2009

Video documentation of my final project for Media Extensions class. The audio on this clip is what i had people listen to on the headphones (please listen with headphones!). this was my artist statement I had on the table.

The Philosophy of Soundscapes
In our visual culture less attention is paid to so-called secondary senses such as hearing. Incidental sounds in our everyday soundscapes (the street, public buildings) are ignored even as they project so much atmospheric influence in human spaces. A home would not feel like a home without the soft hum of the refrigerator or the creaks in the floorboards. A skating rink would feel off without the skidding of skates and chatter of people. These accidental clusters of sounds affect our mood, performance, and perception so profoundly yet we strain to hear past it, to hear the important sounds. My piece seeks to highlight the background noise. Our ability to ignore cluttered soundscapes is temporarily shut down and the listener is forced to hear them.
In working with audio I sought to build up a sense of sculptural sound. Using the concepts of binaural sound recording and editing. I layered samples of several different soundscapes, both staged and natural, and built an illusionary three-dimensional space that would be perceived as such. My piece encourages a new perspective on media art with a focus on the sensory power of audio rather than common visual stimulus.
