ANCHOR:

Protesters seeking to topple the Thai government threatened more
demonstrations in the capital. This is the worst street violence in 16 years after two people died and over 400 were injured.

STORY:

After the clashes between police and anti-government protesters in Bangkok, the streets around parliament today were quiet.

Military troops were sent into the city to back up the police but they didn't disperse the thousands of demonstrators from the People's Alliance for Democracy--or PAD.

The demonstrators have been occupying the prime minister's official compound since late August.

Protesters condemned the police for using tear gas in the clashes.

[Chavalit Arkanit, Protester]:

"The police were over-reacting in handling the protest. Many times
the police kept firing at people who were trying to help those with injuries. They don't feel sympathy for the people."

The PAD is a motley coalition of businessmen, academics and activists
who see the Thai prime minister as a puppet of Thaksin Shinawatra,
who was forced out in a coup in 2006 and has fled to London in exile to escape graft charges.

The Thai prime minister tried to reassure Southeast Asian ambassadors in town, that his government could take care of the situation.

However their meeting to prepare for December's annual ASEAN summit finished earlier than scheduled, after protesters
threatened to disrupt the meeting at the Foreign Ministry.

The prime minister has called for national reconciliation to end a three-year
 political crisis.

But the PAD leaders rejected any dialogue with the government
 after today's clashes.

  • PAD (YELLOW SHIRTS) represents Middle Class Thais and those in wealthy social circles of the army elite who do NOT represent the wide Thai voters.16 million voted for Thaksin's party.

The real losers are the poor Thais. There is no true democaracy with PAD as they don't know the meaning of the word. The current Prime minister, never elected and therefore a puppet of the military -illegal.Abhisit, is also the puppet that conspired to bring down elected Thaskin.

  • Thaksin & the gang, you can run but you can't hide. What a coward escaping to England... The people you killed will follow you and meet you when you die. You MURDERER!!!
