A little .22 for fun plinking / range time is your best bet if your not wanting to carry it, I recommend a Walther-p22, Ruger mark 3, or a Beretta bobcat.
As for if you want something to protect your life but also not be expensive, a nice .38 or .357 revolver would work well, they are mostly under $200 and the .357 mags can fire the less powerful .38 to save on ammo cost.

I had most of the standing animals made over twenty years ago by a fellow who is no longer with us. The others I get at Arntzentargets.
