Video showing the production process of Chrysler Group's new 3.6-litre "Pentastar V6" engine in the 822,000-square-foot Trenton South Engine Plant in Michigan following a $730 million investment that got underway in 2007.

Trenton South Engine Plant; 2300 Van Horn Road, Trenton, Michigan, United States; Floor Space: 822,000 square-feet; Acreage: 136 acres; Products: 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar engine -- 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee; Employment: 204 (167 hourly; 37 salaried) as of March 19, 2010; Union Local: U.A.W. (United Auto Workers) Local #372, #412 and #889.

Plant History: In 2007, Chrysler announced a $730 million investment to produce a new fuel efficient V-6 engine, known as the Pentastar engine. The all-new 822,000-square-foot engine plant will produce the most advanced six-cylinder engine in the history of Chrysler, with an optimized integration of select technologies that deliver refinement, fuel efficiency and performance. The Pentastar delivers a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 8 percent on average when compared with previous Chrysler Group V-6 engines.

The Trenton plant will have a competitive labor agreement that incorporates World Class Manufacturing initiatives and flexible CNC-based machining, volume-bundled parts purchasing, volume-bundled capital investment and standardized tooling.

Over the long term, Chrysler will streamline its V-6 gas engine offerings from seven options to the new fuel-efficient, state-of-the-art 3.6-liter V-6 Pentastar engine, thereby reducing manufacturing complexity.

Awards: The all-new Trenton South Engine Plant was awarded a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Green Building System certification for meeting the highest environmental standards. Trenton is one of only four auto manufacturing facilities to receive a LEED rating of any kind and the only engine manufacturing facility in the world to achieve the honor.
