The Real Rural World

Distenzio closes his eyes...

Distenzio wears a hat and a bow tie. He slowly walks up a dark flight of stairs, at the top he takes off his hat. He flushes a toilet, washes his hands, and brushes his teeth.

He dreams of tesseracts and a Ministry of Dreams.

Morning. A crank phone unit rings. Distenzio walks to the phone unit. A display says: Rethalone Calling. Distenzio lifts the earpiece off the hook. He speaks into the mouthpiece:

"Hello?"

"Distenzio," The reply fizzles static over the line, "Come down here, quick, I need you!"

"Rethalone?"

"Come down here, quick, I need you!"

Distenzio wears a hat and a bowtie. He walks to a cliff edge. Rethalone, in a hat and slick jacket, stands at the bottom in a park on a paved pathway blocked off with police tape. Distenzio shouts down:

"What have you got for me?"

"I don't know. You'll have to come down to where I am and have a look."

Distenzio climbs down the hill, through bramble, saplings and undergrowth. He avoids crossing the police tape. At the bottom he joins Rethalone. Samina waves from a distance beyond the police tape, Rethalone waves back. Distenzio taps his shoulder.

"Who was that?"

"Doesn't matter." Rethalone leads the way along the path, away from the police tape, across a bridge. It seems to Distenzio that it takes a long time to cross the bridge. Just at the halfway point he says:

"This." He faces forward. It seems to Distenzio that he has a hard time speaking. As if the words are stuck in his throat. He swallows and feels parched. He wipes his dry forehead and works his salivary glands He faces forward. He swallows and, just after the bridge's halfway point, he says, "This is just like that dream I had." He swallows and faces forward. "Where I was falling."

Rethalone shakes his head. "But this is nothing like that."

"I have this feeling. It feels so similar." He swallows. "It's haunting."

The instant Rethalone says: 'that,' the pair will step off the bridge. "But this," Rethalone says, and pauses in speech halfway through his sentence and he and his friend walk farther along on the bridge that seems, to Distenzio, to have no end, then, with an exhale, he finishes, "Is nothing like that."

On the other side the two walk off the main path on a dirt path into a forest. They travel some distance there. After a good while walking Rethalone grins with excitement and astonishment, he points, and shouts:
"Look at that!"

Distenzio looks. He stops walking and takes a step back, and he grimaces. "What is it?"

Rethalone kneels beside a strange thing of such absolute strangeness as to be defined as: "indescribable." A tesseract. Rethalone articulates of it, with deep visceral evocation:

"It looks like a hole in the universe!"

"Yeah?" Distenzio inches toward Rethalone.

He holds up a rock and shows it to Distenzio. "Look at this!"

"What is it?"

"Well, it looks like a rock and feels like a rock but look." Rethalone tosses the rock-like thing at a tree trunk. "See that? Goes to bits like a mud pie."

"Antimatter?" Distenzio takes one big step toward Rethalone, and crouches beside him.

"What else?" Rethalone gets a stick and pokes at the tesseract.

Distenzio gazes down at it. "Where do you suppose it goes?"

Rethalone shrugs. "Alternate plane of reality." He looks down into the tesseract. He nods and smiles. "No doubt."

Distenzio leans closer. "What if we fell in?"

"La Brea Tar Pits. It's nobody's dream come true." Rethalone hits Distenzio's shoulder, he says, "La Brea's least of all." He laughs.

Distenzio scowls. "What is all this?"

"It's clearly a deep dark mystery." He points at the tesseract.

"Yeah." Distenzio leans toward the tesseract and faces Rethalone. He says, "But, I mean, why'd you call me."

Rethalone smiles and rolls his eyes. "Because it had to be you."

"Why?"

Rethalone stares. His face blank. "Because the Black Book says so." And he pushes Distenzio into the tesseract.

Distenzio screams as he tumbles inside.

  • How much freedom did you give your foley artist?

    "Antimatter?"

    "What else?"

    Well, duh!

I'm enjoying it so far. Good choice of actors. Camara works a bit shaky (unless you were going for that, in which case good job).

I have to warn you, I've seen some of the director's earlier work and he can be a bit of a Kubrick.

  • Awesome sound effects, nice job!
