How to Root the EVO 4G on Gingerbread 2.3.3 Tutorial (Windows)

Step One: Download SuperUser zip http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip & copy to your root of SDcard

Step Two: Download and install HTC Drivers http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe

Step Three: Download Revolutionary: S-OFF & Recovery Tool http://revolutionary.io/ (Note the download link is at the bottom of the page. You will need to enter your EVO's Serial number which is located under the battery. Make sure you to copy/write down the beta key. You will need it later)

Step Four: Enable USB debugging mode on phone (To do this go to Setting -- Applications -- Development -- check box for USB debugging)

Step Five: Connect your phone to you PC - Select USB Charging

Step Six: Unzip Revolutionary tool and run it as admin (to run as admin, right click and select run as admin) (make sure you install recovery image when asked) (Note after the tool is complete you will be left in fastboot mode, just select bootloader then select recovery to boot into recovery) Here is
AmonRA Recovery http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1359&loc=http%3A%2F%... that can been flashed from bootloader. You can later flash Clockworkmod recovery from Rom Manager if you want.

Step Seven: Boot into recovery

Step Eight: Flash SuperUser and reboot your device.

Make sure to uninstall HTC sync and disable antivirus.

FAQS

Q: When I run Revolutionary tool it just sits at "waiting for device".
A: Make sure you have HTC SYNC Closed and or Removed in order for this to work - Thanks @smallba

Q: I'm stuck at "zerging root" nothing seems to work.
A: Again make sure you un-install HTC sync and turn off your antivirus and/or firewall


Q: I keep getting invalid key. What am i doing wrong?
A: The beta key is case sensitive so make sure you get it right, try to copying the key into notepad to verify the characters. The Revolutionary tool will give you your device serial number, verify you entered the correct SN. If you are still having issues try regenerating the beta key.

Q: I'm having issues flashing anything from recovery.
A: If you are having issues flashing/loading new roms try updating ClockworkMod Recovery from market via rom manger or flash AmonRA that seems to fix it

Q: Will this wipe my device?
A: No if you follow all the steps this will get you S-OFF, Custom recovery & Root.

Q: Will this work on the Japanese EVO is at HBOOT 2.15.001
A: No

Man I done re-loaded that tool 80 times and redid the beta key no matter what i still get invalid key...........Cant understand why

@314MrPsychoMichael Did you copy and paste it? Try that. Make sure all your 0's are 0's and not O's. I can't imagine what else could be the problem. I've rooted my Evo, Evo 3D and my father in law's Evo and never had that problem. I just copied and pasted, but if not then just make sure it's cases are correct. If it's upper case then make it upper case. Sorry I can't be of more help, but the thread that this method acme from has a questions and answers. try there.

I did everything you said in the video. I put the superuser in my sd card, put the PC36IMG on the sd card to, and I did the recovery, installed it, did the fastboot, flashed the zip file but It does not give me permission to do anything. What is the problem ?

hello.. um i tried to use this to root my evo, but i don't think it really worked, so i tried to UNroot and i don't think that worked either, cause when i try to install the latest software update, after it restarts, it brings up a black screen with a little blue android and an exclamation mark in a triangle and it just stays there, until i take the battery out and turn it back on... what is wrong with my phone/ how can i fix it?

@Adonis8487 if your rooted go on xda development area and find roms. there's a tut on xda teaching you how to flash them to your phones. most mods come in a flashable zip xda-developers (dot) com should be able to teach u everything.

I got it. The superuser was just an older version so I went on another video and tried a different su and it worked. But one question? how can I change the appearance of my phone? Like to customize it the way I want it to look?
