The reason this game is counted as scary isn't because of the imagery, or the possible alien threat. This game is terrifying because the player, whether they realize it or not, must imagine themselves as Mike Dawson.

@M30W3R I think technically, Mike's darkworld counterpart is Jack. Mike is the only human who goes into the dark world, and Jack is the shapeshifter and the only darkling who can go into the normal world. Mike's a dork but Jack is supposed to be cool (even though he isn't really). All the stuff Jack says about being in Mike's imagination was just him fucking with Mike, teasing him before death.
