2008 HSBC Celebration of Light
Vancouver Fireworks Competition

For those who don't know, the "Celebration of Light" is the annual fireworks competition in Vancouver where contending Countries compete for the best fireworks display. Formally known as the "Symphony of Fire" sponsored by Benson & Hedges, the name for the event was changed after 2000 when the sponsor changed to HSBC.
I attended three of the four fireworks displays that were held last month in English Bay. Unfortunately I was not able to attend the fourth display which was the grand finale that each Country contributed to. The good news is I have each Country's performance.
JULY 23, 2008 TEAM CANADA
For this first event, I thought it would be a great idea to film the fireworks from a distance up in the Mountains. I figured it would look great showing the surrounding city, it would be away from the crowds, and it would fit in well with Team Canada's Theme. So drove up to Cypress Mountain and set up on a railing at the first lookout point. Unfortunately my camera's zoom was not as powerful as I hoped it would be. Live and learn, the following two events I went to a closer location to film the fireworks. My apologies to my fellow Canadians for my camera's lack of zoom, the consolation is we won the competition. Thats right, Team Canada won this year! You're watching the Winner!
Quick Notes:
- Canada's Performance is about Godzilla attacking the City
- Each Country's Performance is about 25 minutes long
- 5 minutes was edited out of this Performance to fit it into two videos

THEME: ATTACK
"Panic has swept the city after recent events in the bay. Several ships have been sunk and buildings along the coast have been destroyed. Scientists have ruled out previous theories of underwater volcanic activity. New reports of a strange creature rising from the water moments prior to the attacks are emerging, but have yet to be confirmed...
Spawned in the ocean's depths, it stalks the earth...
Let us take you on a voyage of fear and discovery as the world declares war on the oceans secret. Face a terror nothing could prepare us for. Mourn lost souls and rally spirits when it seems all hope is lost. The future of humanity hangs by a thread. Will mankinds ingenuity triumph? Witness what may be the end.
Let fire in the sky capture your imagination as we tell you the story of humanity's greatest hour."

Thanks! They put on a pretty good show this year. China's fireworks display was pretty good too, I should have that up in a few weeks. USA should be posted next mid-week.
