This reminds me of watching turn signals of cars and trying to find ones that are on the same time. they never are but they are close enough that for a few moments they are on the same time.

They are actually both playing the exact same thing at the same time in the beginning. The second piano is just doing it slightly faster so they shift out of phase.

I remember getting a similar effect when playing a piano piece over a recorded version of myself on my keyboard, I couldn't sync myself to the music so it sounded phased like this. :)
