Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings Phidylé (composed by Henri Duparc, text by Leconte de Lisle, 1889) in Moscow, 2005
Fortepiano: Ivari Ilja

The grass is soft for slumber beneath the fresh poplars,
on the slopes by the mossy springs,
which, in the meadows flowering with a thousand plants,
lose themselves under dark thickets.

Rest, o Phidylé! the midday sun shines on the foliage
and invites you to sleep!
Among clover and thyme, alone, in full sunlight
hum the fickle honeybees.

A warm fragrance circulates about the turning paths,
the red cornflower tilts,
and the birds, skimming the hill with their wings,
search for shade among the wild roses.

But when the sun, turning in its resplendent orbit,
finds its heat abating,
let your loveliest smile and your most ardent kiss
recompense me for waiting!

  • not b ad but he ignores much of the written dynamics....because hes a sexy sex machine i guess the rules don't apply to him so much

  • @Cantormatis Agreed. Fantastic singing, but its just not as sensual this fast.

  • His singing is great and fantastic. His french diction could be way better I think. In his level of singing it would make a difference. It kind of distracts me from what he does with the piece musically.

  • Beautiful, but it seems too fast for my taste, perhaps less sexy then I would like...

  • I love it when he smiles!!! So cute!!! :)

  • Absolutely gorgeous! I'd much rather listen to DH than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau...

  • I'm not native french, what a pity! But DH too. What a beauty of music! His voice is from the most beautiful lyric baritones I ever heard, and here he make it reverberating like in gottic cathedral(not just here-- in some of russian songs, too).ADMIRATION!!!

  • I LOVE Dmitri when he sings song literature; this is a gorgeous example, unofrced, intimate, and impossibly sexy.
