Here's a video of a rather long, exclusively Norfolk Southern powered consist, taken on the 20th of June, 2011 at around noon. I was visiting my aunt in Mishawaka (near South Bend), Indiana, and this very busy Norfolk Southern (formerly the 'Conrail Line') caught my eye. Because of the frequency of consists in the area, all grade crossings have been silenced; no bells, no horns. However, the sound of these very long trains can still be heard from quite a bit aways! When I was asleep for that matter, I could occasionally faintly feel the rumbling and hear the trains outside in the middle of the night; of course, we were only a couple blocks from the tracks.
Please excuse the shaky camera, here. I was shooting this with a free hand, and didn't anticipate the forces generated by the train. Notice how the camera shook a bit violently when the locomotives passed? That's the power of four huge engines for you! I hope I can get a tripod for my visit to the Midwest Summer of 2012.
