For what the Apollo program cost, you could have sent at least TWENTY FIVE UNMANNED MISSIONS out that cost as much as the Spirit and Opportunity being sent to Mars (difference between 1969 and 2011 dollars NOT figured in). We could have thoroughly explored the entire solar system. Instead, we just got the moon.
We don't have a "space elevator", and we don't have the technology to build a structure that would be twenty two thousand miles tall, and we certainly can't even start to afford it.
