Of the eight million pets that enter animal shelters and rescue groups every year, approximately three million of these healthy and treatable pets are euthanized due to a lack of adoption. While there has been steady progress on the issue, the continued euthanasia of our best friends and family members is a national tragedy.

Adopting a pet is a life-changing and enriching experience. It not only saves an animal's life, but adopted pets also provide unconditional love, affection and attention. Research has even shown that owning a pet has many positive psychological and physical health benefits.

Presently, most people do not obtain their pets from shelters, but rather from pet stores, the Internet, friends, breeders or other sources. In an effort to change this trend, The Shelter Pet Project is designed to encourage pet lovers throughout the country to make shelters and rescue groups the first place they turn to when acquiring companion animals. Campaign ads use humor to give shelter pets a voice and break down negative stereotypes; contrary to popular beliefs, animals most frequently find themselves in shelters due to owner-related issues.

At the www.theshelterpetproject.org users will find information about how to adopt from a shelter, as well as a fun matching tool designed to help potential pet owners identify traits to look for in an animal. Based on results, it will even supply a list of suitable pets avilable in local shelters. Other fun and interactive tools are also available, all in an effort to significantly increase the rate of pet adoption.

  • Hi, my name is Randy and I'm a bandicoot !

  • @Bitsy83 Yes. You saved her from uncertainty & possibly death.

All my cats were strays. One has cerebellar hypoplasia - kinda like palsy for cats. My ex-boss found him wet, starved, and only a couple weeks old. First vet said he wouldn't last a month & I should just put him down. I told him to fuck off.

He's gonna be 15 this year and is one happy furball. Every year I send that idiot vet a picture of me sitting with Sascha while giving the camera the finger.

  • Lol, i almost cried!

  • This is my favourite commercial <3

And I wanna punch Randy in the face....

  • At first I didn't think I wanted to watch what might be a sad psa, but this was funny.

the dog ought to take the wallet and order himself some fine dining

I may be draconian but I'd like laws to suit my style of justice so that we can tar and feather people that do things that cruel!

  • I hate when people abandon animals like that. MF's

  • My dad found a little tuxedo kitten locked in the shed at the rod & gun club. Brought her home, I fell in love with her, kept her, and now she's the best cat I've ever had. I wouldn't give this kitty up for anything!

I know I didn't get her from a pound, but that still counts as adoption, right?

  • i kinda seriously love this one! :D

  • @Woodster117

    Thanks! I found it. Hahaha

    -Randy
