actually most of the industrialized world was being subsidized by US so we were being dragged down by that because we wanted to repair Europe after all the damage of WW2.

Your argument of the 1950s not being a good time in American history because of the mistreatment of minorities doesn't make any sense, it actually HURT us economically to discriminate against almost 20% of the population, but yet we were smarter, stronger and more wealthy than we are today, the 2000s have sucked.

@ptbwf Well, we had the 'advantage' of the rest of the industrialized world having been reduced to rubble. I'm not opposed to Keynesianism and for white men, the 1950s were a fairly good time in American history, but for women and virtually every ethnic group, it was a pretty ugly time. And it wasn't just minorities. It was also people who had ideas that didn't mesh with societal expectations. Try being a socialist or communist 1950s. Try being gay in the 1950s and tell me how great it was.

beyond the unfair practices against minorities in the earlier years, was a robust economy and a brilliant population that made this country a world super power.
