  • I thought the road leading to the trailhead was closed during the winter months? Or does it stay open all year round?

  • The Alum Cave trailhead is off Newfound Gap Road, which is open in winter, except for when it is closed due to ice and snow on the roadway. The Park Service works to try to clear and reopen this road when this happens, but closure has been fairly frequent this winter. A clear day after the snowfall is your best chance of finding the road open with snow to view. Latest closings park info: (865) 436-1200
