- Small sailing craft often manned by Indonesians, fish Australian waters for the homely sea cucumber, a delicacy in Oriental markets and restaurants, believed to have medicinal properties. Nothing about the sea cucumber is attractive—it scavenges detritus, defends itself by shooting out sticky filaments and has a leathery hide—except the price it brings. A large sea cucumber can weigh over two pounds and, when dried and sold as trepang, can fetch more than $20.
