Hey all, now this vid is a bit of an experiment for me - I did some grooving in 11/8, which is a completely new time signature to me. I actually counted the groove in this vid like this:
1-2-3-4-5-1-2-3-4-5-6. I think I might of gone out of time a couple of times but I'm pretty proud because I've only done about 30mins of practise on 11/8 so far :D anyway hope you like the vid, please comment/advise/rate whatever and check out my other vids! cheers, tim :D my drum specs are on one of my other vids I think :)btw the groove at the end is 4/4 (the kinda off beat groove on the bell) Oh and also, I know my high tom angle is pretty ridiculous in this video.

  • Hey dude, how exactly do you mic your drumset? Is it just overheads? Looks like you dont use much and it sounds beautiful man, props. Im trying to get something inexpensive to put up vids of my self, but cant find anything :\ any help would be appreciated! Thanks dude, and rock on, keep on kicking ass on the set! :D

  • I love the 11/8 groove you have going on here. I also love your snare sound. The way you have your snare tuned and are stricking the snare drum kinda gives you that Bill Bruford snare sound which is totally awesome, especially considering that Bill Bruford is the master of odd time signature drum patterns...

    P.S. You should also experiment with 11/8 by playing a bar of 4/4 and 3/8. Example: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 123 which equals 11/8 and post it.

  • @barbzzz08 The way that I like to think of it is as the way the beats are divided up. So in 11/4 you would have, for example, a rhythm that highlights the accents of 3 sets of 3 quarter notes followed by 1 set of 2 quarter notes, so basically 3/4 + 3/4 + 3/4 + 2/4. And in 11/8 you would have a rhythm that highlights the accents of 3 sets of 3 eighth notes followed by 1 set of 2 eighth notes, or 3/8 + 3/8 + 3/8 + 2/8. I like to think of it as the freedom it allows you -11/4 = more, 11/8 = less.

  • @barbzzz08 11/8 is a way of writing it out so that it's essentially played in "Half" the time of 11/4, It's basically saying the same as it being 5.5/4, so that the bars are half as long.

  • @barbzzz08 Technically, it's just an indicator of how fast it's played, although it's open to interpretation. It's basically the same thing.
