Maritime School 'De Ruyter' Zeevaartschool Vlissingen, 1984; Test Stand; 8mm Old Film

Deze film werd opgenomen voor de afstudeeropdracht van Willem Teitsma en Wil Theunissen in januari 1984, op de Hogere Zeevaartschool "Maritiem Instituut De Ruyter" te Vlissingen, Nederland.
De afstudeeropdracht heette "Ontwerp en Uitvoering Proefstand Woodward Regulateur" en maakte deel uit van onze opleiding "Scheepswerktuigkunde".

De doelstelling was om een simulatiemodel te bouwen voor een Woodward Regulateur, waarmee de acties en afstellingen van een Woodward Regulateur op een realistische manier konden worden nagebootst.

De bijzonderheid daarbij was dat de Woodward Regulateur niet, zoals normaal, werd gekoppeld aan de brandstoftoevoerregeling van een dieselmotor-generator.
Het simulatiemodel moest functioneren met een elektromotor-generator, om zo een compacte en eenvoudige proefstand te verkrijgen waarmee later ook de lessen voor Meet- en Regeltechniek gehouden konden worden.

Wij waren erg trots dat wij er als eerste van drie eerdere afstudeerders in waren geslaagd om een dergelijk simulatiemodel te bouwen.
De losse apparaten, Regulateur, Elektromotor-Generator, Potmeter, etc. hadden we bij elkaar gezocht uit de praktijklokalen van de school.
Het idee voor het hele samenstel en bijbehorende onderdelen zoals, V-riemschijven, hefboom, contragewicht, montageframes, etc. hebben we helemaal zelf bedacht, ontworpen, gemaakt én gebouwd.

In die tijd waren frequentieregelaars nog enorm lomp en onbetaalbaar.
Daarom kozen we voor een gelijkstroomregeling: lineair, goedkoop en eenvoudig.

Deze 8mm film uit de oude doos, neemt ons terug naar die voor ons onvergetelijke tijd van ons afstudeerjaar.......

The beautifull music in this film is the St. Elmo's Fire Love Theme from David Foster.
I think the music goes very well with this film about our graduation project, because it cherishes best all the memories from that time.
(St. Elmo's Fire came out in 1985 and revolves around a group of friends that have just graduated from Georgetown University and their adjustment to their post-university lives and the responsibilities of encroaching adulthood. We feel connected with emotions from that period)

This film is about the Graduation Project of Willem Teitsma and Wil Theunissen in January 1984.
The graduation project was called "Design and Implementation Woodward Governor Test Stand" and was an examination part of our training Marine Engineering.

The objective was to build a simulation model for Woodward Governor, with which the actions and settings of a Woodward Governor in a realistic way could be imitated.

The particularity was that the Woodward Governor was not linked to the fuel system of a diesel generator (as usual).
The simulation model was operated with an electric motor-generator, to create a compact and easy to use trial stand later to be used for the lessons Measurement and Control.

We were very proud that we were the first of three former graduates, successful in order to build such a model.
The individual devices, Governor, Electric motor-generator, potentiometer, etc. we had sought together from the practice premises of the school.
The idea for the whole assembly and associated components such as V-pulleys, lever, counterweight, mounting frames, etc., we had entirely conceived, designed and built.

In that time, frequency controls were enormous and priceless.
Therefore we chose a DC motor / generator: linear controlled, cheap and easy to use and to understand.

This 8mm film from the old box, takes us back to that for us unforgettable time during our graduation year .......
