This is a discussion of what Ethical Relativism is and what it is not. Many people confuse Ethical Relativism with Cultural Relativism and/or Moral Relativism. This video attempts to make the distinctions clear.

  • On the subject of Mrs Mead: was she not accused of lying about her observations on the Samoans? And did she not lie about it to have the study fit into her anti-western cultural prejudices?

  • @theantisauronist I hadn't heard that, I hope it's not true, but I'll have to look into it, maybe I'll have to find a better example to use in the future.

  • Santa Claus?

  • This is infinitely better than I initially thought it would be. Although, you seem to have left out Ruth Benedict, who in her work "Patterns of Culture," makes a strong case for a strong version of cultural relativism (which is really an argument for ethical/moral relativism). And as far as I know, there is little distinction between "ethical relativism" and "moral relativism." They merely seem to be alternative ways of referring to the same concept (which is that morals are not absolute).
