When one thinks, speaks or reads about the Mayerling incident, the first things people think of are love and suicide. There is so much more to this story than that, and most of the time, a very important person is forgotten: Rudolf's wife, crown princess Stéphanie.

The letter at the end of the video is the last letter Rudolf wrote to her, before he died at Mayerling:

Liebe Stephanie!
Du bist von meiner Gegenwart und Plage befreit;
werde glücklich auf Deine Art.
Sei gut für die arme Kleine, die das
einzige ist, was von mir übrig bleibt.
Allen Bekannten, besonders Bombelles,
Spindler, Latour, Wowo, Gisela, Leopold, etc. etc.
sage meine letzten Grüße.
Ich gehe ruhig in den Tod, der allein meinen guten Namen
retten kann.
Sei herzlichst umarmt.
Dein Dich liebender
Rudolf

Translation:

Dear Stephanie,

you are now rid of my presence and annoyance;
be happy in your own way.
Take care of the poor wee one, she is all that remains of me.
To all acquaintances, especially Bombelles, Spindler, Latour, Wowo,Gisela, Leopold, etc., etc., say my last greetings.
I go quietly to my death, which alone can save my good name.
I embrace you affectionately.
Your loving Rudolf.

The pictures, paintings and sketches I used, all show Stephanie, whether alone, with her husband, with her beautiful daughter Erzsi, with her relatives or her sister. Not all known pictures/sketches/paintings of Stéphanie are used in this video.

  • Aus welchem Film sind die eingeblendeten Ausschnitte denn? :)

  • @Calypsogodness Yes, indeed. Stéphanie was much in love with her husband. It was all so tragic and sad.

  • She can sing gooooooooooood!

  • @Gingermaus don't worry we learn exactly the same in France lol

  • @Calypsogodness We don´t learn anything about it in school either. Not as long I am not in classXD It is a very interesting piece of history, but I think Rudolf´s whole life is even more interesting. He wasn´t the fairy tale prince and that´s what makes him so interesting. Also is mother is very fascinating to study.

    All we learn at school is the French Revolution and Hitler. Mainly.

  • @Gingermaus And sorry, but i don't know anything about Mayerling, i am french and this part of history is not what you learn at school.

  • @Gingermaus thanks i was just wondering because the last letter, Rudolph didn't seem to not love her but he seems to did not care about her feelings, her pain....

  • @Calypsogodness Well, can you love someone who you were forced to marry when you were 15? I am not so sure about that. But they had a very happy time, when Erzsi was born. They must have at least respected each other. But it is more than likely that he didn´t love Mary. Anyways. It is not easy to figure out if someone loved someone else. Especially when it is that long ago. And she remarried twice...
