The pounding of more than 10,000 pairs of feet running through city streets this weekend makes one thing very clear: the Mississauga Marathon is not only here to stay, but is well on its way to becoming an institution.
It's a remarkable success story when one considers this is only the event's fourth year.
There were nay-sayers when Landmark Sport Group first came forward with the idea.
And there remain nitpickers who say the marathon doesn't attract enough elite runners.
But the Mississauga Marathon isn't trying to compete with races like the one in Boston (which has been around for only 111 years!).
Instead, wisely, it is carving out a niche for itself as an event for the entire family.
This year, there will be seven events to choose from, ranging from a two kilometre fun run/walk to a five kilometre event, dubbed "The Hazel," to the 42-kilometre marathon itself.
The event grows bigger every year because enthusiastic amateur runners know that the Mississauga Marathon is about more than prize money.
It's about the beauty of the city, striving for a "personal best," and the opportunity to be a part of something special.
Ten thousand people can't be all wrong.
