For Windows, you need to install a Japanese language pack (included with Windows) For details, you can look for help in Windows, but it's basically in the Control panel under languages. Once that's done, you can switch between keyboards using special key combinations. After that, you just start typing the Japanese words and to get kanji, you can press the spacebar which causes the input to cycle through the possible different kanjis that are possible.
