World War II Second World War Vidoes

This episode tells the tragic story of the "bridge too far" and the ill-fated Operation Market Garden--the Allied operation that was supposed to end World War II in 1944. Montgomery's rather fanciful conclusion that Market Garden was "90% successful" was hardly supported by the facts. The operation was an unmitigated failure. This episode, from the landmark television series Battlefield, features fascinating archive footage from all over the world. The program includes a review of the political and military situation before the battle, portraits of leaders and commanders, an explanation of weapons and tactics, and the story of the battle itself. Vivid graphics place the battle into the context of the war as a whole. CHAPTERS Introduction * Montgomery's Bold Idea * The Allied Forces * Allied Commanders * Allied Weapons * An Armada of the Air * The German Response * Destination Arnhem Bridge * Approx run time: 1 hr, 45 min. • @TheYFNA It's estimated that both divisions combined were at panzer regiment strength at best.

  • @rangerbobcat My post said "A Bridge Too Far" is the most accurate. Obviously the battle sequences in a movie like "Saving Private Ryan" are more realistic, but in terms of the events of Market Garden and the people involved, "A Bridge Too Far" is probably the most accurate.

  • @cadge31 Interesting. Which movies about WWII would you consider more accurate? Not a

challenge. I really would like to know.

  • @cadge31 I disagree. But O'well. A couple characters were made up .

  • This doc just confirms how accurate the movie, "A Bridge Too Far" is. It's probably the most accurate WWII movie ever made.

  • 'Everyone sat nonchalantly, legs crossed, looking bored. I wanted to say something about this impossible plan, but I just couldn’t. I was unpopular as it was, and anyway who would have listened?' - Stanislaw
