The lamp is burnin' low upon my table top
The snow is softly falling
The air is still in the silence of my room
I hear your voice softly calling

If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you

The smoke is rising in the shadows overhead
My glass is almost empty
I read again between the lines upon each page
The words of love you sent me

If I could know within my heart
That you were lonely too
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you

The fire is dying now, my lamp is growing dim
The shades of night are lifting
The morning light steals across my window pane
Where webs of snow are drifting

If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
And to be once again with you.

  • Of the musical poets of my generation ( I am 64), none has had such a profound influence on me as a player and writer than Gordon Lightfoot. Rooted in folk, he was quickly covered by the many troubadors who he helped propel to stardom. Along the way, I believe he surpassed them all in terms of his body of original work. The excellence of his lyrics and melodic scores has well surpassed those of his contemporaries to include PP&M, Simon and Garfunkle, Jim Croce, and Bob Dylan.

    God bless GL

  • @rumbaby999 yep, same here. I almost don't even like calling it "music" because it's so much more. I don't think most people get it but his work has a spiritual component to it thats so much deeper than pretty much any other music. He can write lyrics and music that go together with such perfection and make you feel the full depth of beauty that life is capable of. It takes me away and makes me feel the beauty of life that i felt in my youth and no longer feel. That is, till i listen to GL.

  • Beautiful song. Feel sorry for the five who don't like it.

  • @hochbob

I agree with you totally!!! I'm your generation and he is in the same league as all the ones you mentioned. I only pray he will stay well and continue to amaze us with his talent...

  • Ditto

  • Another fabulous song by Gordon Lightfoot. Please enjoy.

  • Awesome! Saw Mr. Lightfoot 3 times in the 70's. I was a broke college student, could hardly afford the tickets but had my priorities. The woman I didn't marry was with me in my truck on a snowy Michigan road, December night, this song came on, and we fell in love all over again. The woman I married has had no such GL moment, still I love her more than life. No wonder I became a novelist, with Lightfoot's phrasings and imagery often creeping into my work. God, I'm a lucky man. Thanks for posting.
