The SS UNITED STATES has been sitting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania since 1996. She has not moved from this spot since then, and not much has changed.

Recently, the Big U (as she is affectionately known) has been bought by the S.S. United States Conservancy (which has worked for years on creating a viable future for the ship). Efforts are being made by the Concervancy, and other groups, to covert her into a tourist attraction in New York City.

While she awaits this potential, though tentitive, future, her massive superstructure reminds us that through the chipping paint of a rusting ecomony, is a glistening new coat. Behind the rusting hull and discolored smokestacks is a piece of Americana as strong and sturdy as the day she first sailed.

The SS United States is a symbol of America's unity, history, and innovation. This dignity is a key reason why there is such an effort to save her. Bringing this piece of American heritage back to life should restore American pride and integrity.

Her life is not yet complete.

  • Not too long. I worked multiple days so it's a little hard to say. A few days on and off. It's all about the effort :)

  • @EastCoastDude99 dude u 4 real so many great ships were made into casinos like old river steamers and other great ships if it were up to me every ship that was made into a casino would be saved and restord in good working order plus the ss us holds the speed recard so she should be restord and given the same steam engines and props that our military ships have after al the prototyps were put on the ss us only hers were oil fired and the navy's are nuceler powered but stil long liv ss us!!

  • @BunniesRock55 it would be beter if she retuned into servas with the same props and steam engines we use 4 r naval ships but not nuclear powerd like r military steam ships amazing the fastest ship in the world is steam powerd long liv steam power !!! :)

  • casino? museum? shes not ready for retirement yet! get her props back, spend some money and get her back out on the atlantic! she would pay for her own refurbishment within 3 years - and what a great investment!!!

  • casino? I think It would be nice if the ship is converted into a Museum. Now that would be nice.

  • Be nice is they converted her to a floating casino on the Delaware. Then her life would be saved.

  • the video is wonderful and the music makes it magnificent - who wrote that music and where can I get more of their work
