The McCalmans came to Coal Aston Village Hall, Derbyshire, for their last ever English gig prior to Ian McCamans retirement at Christmas. They performed a superb couple of sets to a highly appreciative capacity audience.
In the audience was ex McCalman Hamish Bayne. The whole event was hugely reminiscant for many of us who had been involved with The Cartwheel Folk Club over the years, Also on the bill were the definitive version of Cartwheel - Nick Gibbons, Tony Wood and Geoff Heppel who supported the Macs along with ourselves, Scuppered.
Ye Jacobites has always been a firm favourite amongst Macs fans. This anti war song still very relevant today

  • Sad that they of the past but the have achieved a sort of immortality as they recorded on vinyl so much more durable (if treasured as mine are) than the digital illusion and sound so much better esp. through valves. In my head I can "rise again and go to my ain country" I have a few lps by these guys, my favorite (difficult) is "Bonnie Bands Again" love the title track sing it (badly) all the time.

  • @likatyga It's my favourite one as well, difficult as you say. I remember talking to Ian about that album not long after they had released Ancestral Manouvres and at the time he said he felt that Bonnie Bands was rushed and not well produced. Maybe that was true but still a real belter IMHO !

  • I would love to hear the Shian road

  • Wonderful stuff! Takes me back to their performances in the Attic Club at RAF Gutersloh in the 70's. Oh to be young again.....

  • I'm an American and I just discovered the McCallmans on UTube. I'm sorry to see they are no longer performing because I think I just might have flown to Scotland to catch one of their shows. Superb performers.

  • Some of us remember The McCalmans very fondly - "The Bells of the Town" on Eyemouth harbour remains one of the finest pieces of singing I have ever heard... many years ago now!

  • Plus ca change plus c'est la meme chose...

Thank you so much for this; it lifted my spirit and brought a tear to my eye at the same time. It deserves so many more views than this but I guess not so many of us remember the McCalmans now. Superb.
