Together with Rachmaninoff's prelude op.32 no.10, this is my favourite piano piece ever. Volodos plays this so beautifully, even if you do not like classical music, you'll appreciate this piece. it is amazing how Volodos get's all the voices out so clearly, creating so much color in his tones. this is an extremely difficult piece, and he plays it practically flawless. unlike other pieces, he plays this one exactly how Rachmaninoff wrote it down. an amazing recording by the world's greatest living pianist!

  • Volodos is the modern day liszt. There is no other pianist living today, or the past 100 years or so that can compare to Volodos. It's too bad his name isn't as big as people like Lang Lang or Horowitz because in true virtuosity and musicality, Volodos is the best. The man has absolutely no struggle with the instrument whatsoever.

  • @bnizzio

I completely agree. Don't you think this performance is absolutely phenomenal? I heard this version for the first time about 3.5 years ago and it still gives me shivers. My god what a pianist!!

  • There is a recording of Rachmaninoff playing moment 2 on youtube that is unmatched, the performence for all time...Volodos performence is very nice :-)

  • I've been searching but I can't find it! could you send me a link or a title?

  • This is of course outstanding. Horowitz also made a fantastic recording of this work, it is on youtube.

  • true, Horowitz's version is so much darker, more emphasis on the dissonants (and the piece basically consists out of dissonants) which makes the piece very raw. I think it is amazing. However, Volodos manages to turn the dissonant left hand movements into such beautiful flowing melodies, which is something I haven't heard on any other version of this piece.

Horowitz's version is one with many contrasts while Volodos's version is more 'organic' and 'rounder' if you understand what I mean by that.

  • Arcadi Volodos is the closest thing to Sergei Rachaminoff we have today.

  • What can I add, donFrankos? Nuanced and flawless, impeccable attention to detail, revealing underlying concepts heretofor ignored....BRAVO....to you, too!

  • @bnizzio, yeah, Volodos has the best technique of any pianists I've seen. He can absolutely anything. I find that he has more virtuosity than musicality though. Nevertheless, Volodos says a great deal with his playing and Lang Lang says very little with his playing. Volodos is a thousand times better than Lang Lang, but since he's older and fat and doesn't make stupid, showy facial expressions, he doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

  • Today, 10/29/11, is the first time I have heard Volodos. I have just heard God playing the piano.

  • I don't want to nitpick or anything but the person in the picture is not Volodos!!!! Arcadi never uses a piano bench!!!! Always a chair!!!! The playing is ofcourse very Volodosian!!!! They must have used an inferieur clone for the photoshoot.

  • @Bret6464 Agreed, just like so many of the pieces he recorded. Rachmaninoff's sound was so multi-faceted. I've never heard a tone so red-hot like his, which, for example, you can hear in the climax of his recording of this piece.

  • wonderful !!!
