Mine is FUBAR.

Sorry to read that, Tiny, I'm afraid it might prove to be a more "terminal" problem in your case then - this cold restart fix I proposed (and which Apple has on its own website) has clearly helped a lot of others already.
Had any problems with iPods before ? Mine has been working fine again for months now after that single breakdown I had. Any shop that you can go to, or contact online ?

I've had the same issues. Inbox me and I will explain the steps I took to fix it....80g Classic. If it works for you, I post a video for others.

thanks to you too @jasonkinky , IT WORKED!
My 160GB iPod Classic suddenly went completely dead on me just now, completely black, no response whatsoever.
I've just gone to iPod Classic Trouble Shooting Assistant online and found this:
2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
It worked right away ! I hope it helps you too !
