As with so many of Barbirolli's and Beecham's recordings of the works of Delius, this is truly OUTSTANDING - a great evocation of a wonderful work, well worth the time spent listening to it. Thank you VERY much for sharing this gem with us!!!!!

The DVD of Ken Russell's Song of Summer is difficult to obtain.
Russell considered Song of Summer his finest work (Russell died in 2011). The film, 'Song of Summer' was based on Eric Fenby's, 'Delius as I Knew'.

@sfkcbf But this music was written at the height of the ferment and turmoil of the 20th century, i.e. it was begun in 1918 and resumed in 1921, receiving its first performance ten or so years later. Of course, the 19th century could hardly be described as a period without turmoil, both politically and artistically. But it is clear that Delius ' reaction to the "new sounds" of the 20th century was to develop his own, very personal style, related, but hardly identical to, Grieg and Debussy.

I find this piece particularly moving, as it only exists because Eric Fenby, hearing of the composer's paralysis, went out to France and took it down at Delius's dictation. The music was literally plucked from oblivion

Dennoch: diese symphonische Dichtung ist auch bedrückend ( elle correspond partiellement à l'ambiance des Wesendock-Lieder...)

This pleasant music, written before so much of the turmoil of the 20th century, along with your sea pictures, is reminiscent of the sea pictures of Henry Scott Tuke, who painted his charming seascapes during those same years. A whole different time and different world.
