it may be a testamant to my bent mind is but this is one of my absolute favorite videos. the images and yummylou's voice pouring the lyrics freeze my body as my eyes leak boiling tears. if this was on vinyl, i'd have worn out several copies playing it over and over. i was so glad the replay feature had been invented. then seeing that image of "agouti" the replay feature on the you tube player became an awesome creation close to the top of my list of awesome creations. thank you for sharing :)
Reading in reverse, it's some relief your comment was not first person, as I originally took it..
I first heard this driving back to Dallas from Austin. I'm not prone to 'big' emotional 'stuff'. But a minute or so into the song, realizing the meaning, and the imagery was crushing..
Thank for the backstory as I didn't know it, nor care to add to it. I'm sure we all must, appreciate the song in all its sublime moving parts.. but with all love, don't live with this song, just visit. ;)
. . . him lyin' on his bed. I could not speak a single word. No tears streamed down my face. I just sat there on the living room couch. Staring off into space. Mama and Daddy went over to the house to see what had to be done. They took the sheets off of the bed and they went to call someone. Some of us gathered at a friend's house to help each other ease the pain. I just sat alone in a corner chair. I couldn't say much of anything."
Sweet Old World deals in part with the suicide of a family friend. "When Daddy told me what happened I couldn't believe what he just said. Sonny shot himself with a forty-four and they found . . .

Regarding a previous question: this song was written about poet Frank Stanford, as was another of Lucinda's songs, Pineola.
